Got Green?

Look what's blooming in our backyard ...
(See the links on the lower left for more details from our February 20 event.)

Wilkinson Elementary's Got Green? event on Saturday, February 20 was a huge success. In only a matter of two hours, families and staff members planted 47 trees, prepared a tree nursery, started a garden and learned a variety of tips and tools on topics ranging from outdoor education to recycling to preventing forest fires. Not only did families get to plant their very own tree on campus from start to finish, but students were able to take home terrariums, make tree cookie necklaces, pet live snakes, create bird feeders, meet Smokey the Bear, see how a cotton gin operates and learn about camping. What a wonderful sight it was to look across our field and witness a sea of green t-shirts beautifying our playground area and preparing the staging area for lots of learning to come!

Our committee would like to thank the many generous sponsors of the event that helped it run so smoothly. Please make sure to check out the link on the left menu for a list of our sponsors and for more pictures from the event.

Although the big planting day is over with, this project will continue on. Every classroom will be adopting trees to help maintain and monitor their progress. And as the spring weather warms up, our garden will continue to grow and more plants will be added. Make sure to ask your child about how they are participating in this ongoing effort.
